Redacting here means you destroy or cover pixels inside boxes you draw, then download a new PNG. That is a visual edit in your browser, not a certificate for a court or a hospital. If a policy tells you how to redact, follow that policy. Use this page only for the pixel step.
On this site, redact means you replace or destroy the pixels inside rectangles you draw, then download a PNG. Black box removes the color. Blur and pixelate degrade it. None of those steps stamp the file as legally sufficient for a court, a hospital, or a records request. If you are doing that work, their instructions win. Use the editor only to make the image match the instruction.
A practical test: open the exported PNG and try to read every region you touched, at a large size. If a digit is still a digit, draw again with black box. PDFs are not opened here. Export a page as an image or screenshot the page, then redact that image. Say in the message you send which parts you removed so the reader does not think the black bars are a glitch.

Why does this stay in the browser?
This page is for images that already contain private material. Blur, pixelate, and black box run in your browser, so the file is not sent away to be cleaned. Use a black box for secrets that must not stay readable. Use blur or pixelate only after you have checked that the cover is enough.
Redacting an image means permanently covering the parts that should not be seen. Whether you are sharing a screenshot with a colleague, submitting evidence, or posting a photo publicly, redaction ensures only the intended information is visible.
Black Box mode is identical in visible effect to traditional document redaction. For less visually stark results, Blur and Pixelate provide strong obscuration while looking more natural.

What should you know before you export?

What does "redact" mean?
Redacting means permanently hiding or obscuring information so it cannot be read. In images, this means covering, blurring, or pixelating the sensitive parts.

Can someone reverse the redaction?
If you use Black Box, the pixels are replaced with solid black and this is irreversible. Blur and Pixelate heavily degrade the original content but Black Box is the strongest visual redaction.
Does my image get stored anywhere?
No. The tool runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server.
What file formats can I redact?
JPG, PNG, and WebP. The output is always a PNG file.
Can I redact a PDF?

How many areas can I redact in one image?
There is no limit. Draw as many boxes as you need and each selection adds a new independently redacted region.
Is Black Box redaction the same as traditional document redaction?
Yes. Black Box replaces the selected pixels with solid black and is the same visible effect used in formal document redaction.
Can I redact a photo, not just a document?
