How to redact a photo or image
Image redaction here means you cover pixels you do not want someone else to read, then download a new file. The editor is free. It runs in your browser. The photo or screenshot is not uploaded.

What does redacting an image actually change?
It changes the pixels inside the rectangles you draw, then saves a new image. Blur mixes those pixels, pixelate turns them into blocks, and a black box paints them solid black. The rest of the picture stays sharp. The original file on your device is not replaced.
People use “redacted image” for that result: a photo or screenshot where the private part is no longer readable. On this site the download is a PNG by default, so a redacted PNG is simply that export. It is not a certificate that a court, a hospital, or an employer will accept. If a policy tells you how to redact, follow the policy and use the editor only for the pixel step.
The editor does not find faces, plates, or text for you. You draw each box. That is deliberate. You can see exactly which region changed before you export.
How do you redact a photo without uploading it?
Open the editor, paste or drop the file locally, draw the boxes, pick a mode, and export. Nothing in that sequence sends the image to a server to be cleaned. Closing the tab drops the in-memory copy. The original remains where you saved it.
Start at the homepage editor or any tool page. They are the same canvas. Paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V or Command-V, or drop a JPG, PNG, or WebP. Phone photos work the same way: open the page, choose the image from your gallery, and draw.
Draw one box per secret rather than one box over the whole picture. A page that is a single black rectangle no longer explains what you were trying to show. Leave labels such as “Email” if they are generic, and cover the address itself. Undo removes a box without touching the file on disk.
When the regions look right, export the redacted PNG. Open it outside the editor and read it the way a stranger would. If a digit is still a digit, draw again before you attach the file to an email, a ticket, or a post.
- Open the free editor. It runs in the browser and does not upload the image.
- Paste or drop the photo or screenshot from your device.
- Draw a box over each region you need to hide.
- Choose blur, pixelate, or black box for that region.
- Export a PNG and share the export, not the original.
When should you blur, pixelate, or use a black box?
Use a black box for text that must not be readable. Use pixelate or a strong blur for a face or a plate when the picture should still make sense. If you are unsure, use black. The longer comparison is in the blur, pixelate, and black box guide.
A redacted blur is the softest look. It fits a background screen or a bystander when no large secret is showing. It is a weak cover for a password, an API key, a card number, or an ID number, because letter shapes can survive and short strings are worth guessing. Raise the strength until you cannot read it, or switch modes.
Pixelate is the mosaic people recognize as intentional. Large blocks hide more. Use it for a face you are publishing or a license plate when the car should remain recognizable and the characters are gone. Small blocks over large type can leave a readable rhythm.
Black box replaces the rectangle with solid black in the exported PNG. Use it for passwords, tokens, emails, precise addresses, and anything you would not read aloud in a public ticket. Draw the bar a little larger than the letters. Several small bars are better than one bar that also hides the point of the image.
What should you check before you share the redacted image?
Open the exported PNG at full size and try to read every region you touched. Confirm you are attaching that file. Screenshots also need a pass over the URL, the sidebar, and notification banners. Photos need a pass over faces, plates, and badges in the background.
The original is still on your device, often with a similar name. Operating systems will offer that file first. Send the redacted PNG. If you copied the image to the clipboard, confirm the paste target received the export and not the unedited shot.
A screenshot for a bug report should still show the bug. Cover the query string, headers, and customer names, and leave the broken control. A chat screenshot should not include the Slack sidebar or the email thread above the message you meant to forward. The checklist and the bug-report note are the detailed versions of that pass.
Then stop. The editor cannot decide what you are willing to publish. It can only apply the cover you draw, locally, and hand you a file.
Questions about this
The usual questions are whether a free website has to upload the photo, what a redacted PNG actually is, and whether a redacted blur is enough for a password. It does not upload the photo. The PNG is a new file with the cover already applied. Passwords get a black box.
How do I redact a photo online for free?
Open the editor, paste or drop the photo, draw a box over each private region, choose blur, pixelate, or black box, and export a PNG. There is no account and no fee. The same steps work for a screenshot.
Does “redact image online” mean the file is uploaded?
Not on this site. The canvas edit stays in your browser. hideimage.com does not receive the picture in order to process it. You still choose which exported file to send.
What is a redacted image or a redacted PNG?
It is the file you export after the boxes are drawn. The original on your device is unchanged. A redacted blur mixes pixels inside the box. A black box replaces them with solid black. Share the export, not the camera original or the first screenshot.
Is a redacted blur enough to hide text?
Only if you cannot read the text afterward, including short words. Passwords, tokens, emails, and ID numbers should sit under a black box. Blur and pixelate are better for a face or a plate when the goal is that someone does not recognize it at a glance.
Where should you go next?
Apply the cover in the same local editor this guide describes. Paste a screenshot on the homepage, or open a related note if the leak is a different kind. These links are the next step. They are not separate tools that upload the file.
